INDIANAPOLIS – The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), the umbrella group for 26 inter/national women’s-only social sororities and one of the largest organizations advocating for women, is recognizing the Houston Alumnae Panhellenic Association with the Harriet Macht Outstanding Alumnae Panhellenic Award. The award, established in 1993 by Delta Phi Epsilon in honor of former NPC Chairman Harriet Macht, recognizes excellence in communication, programming, scholarship and service.

“On behalf of the award selection committee, I am so pleased to recognize the Houston Alumnae Panhellenic Association with this award,” said Donna Larson, Alumnae Panhellenics Committee chairman. “The COVID-19 pandemic presented many disruptions to Alumnae Panhellenic operations and the Houston Alumnae Panhellenic has shown their resiliency and commitment to remain focused on the purpose of their association. We were impressed by their creativity and determination to continue to deliver a strong experience in the midst of such uncertain times.”

The Houston Alumnae Panhellenic Association (HAPA) comprises women from 23 of the 26 NPC member organizations and has a membership of more than 5,000 Panhellenic women. HAPA provides relevant programming in areas of service, leadership, academics and friendship and continues to educate potential members on the benefits of sorority membership.

HAPA meetings include programming that has continually evolved to fit the needs of its members. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, HAPA remained focused on supporting its members and providing an enriching experience.

Additionally, HAPA continued to remain focused on reducing the cost of higher education by raising scholarship funds. This year, the association offered 22 scholarships to Panhellenic women. Members also came together to support multiple charities, including the Reading is Fundamental literacy program at a local elementary school, which members supported through volunteer time and financial resources.

To share the benefits of lifelong sorority membership with a broader audience, HAPA has created an outreach program through social media and other communications platforms. The association also works with several local Houston media connections to have newsletter articles published about the sorority experience.
