INDIANAPOLIS — The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), one of the largest advocacy
organizations for women, has recognized the Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic Association as the recipient of the
Harriet Macht Outstanding Alumnae Panhellenic Award. The award, established in 1993 by Delta Phi Epsilon in
honor of former NPC Chairman Harriet Macht, recognizes excellence in communication, programming,
scholarship and service for the 2015-17 biennium.
Founded in 1927, the Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic Association is one of NPC’s thriving community-based
groups. Annually, this association awards over $10,000 in scholarships to high school seniors, collegiate women
and women seeking graduate degrees. The Atlanta members donate their time and money to support the Mary
Hall Freedom House, an in-house facility for women, serving more than 675 women and 130 children annually.
“Competition was steep this biennium for the Harriet Macht Outstanding Alumnae Panhellenic Award,” said
Frances Mitchelson, NPC Panhellenics chairman. “The Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic out-shined the other award
applicants with alumnae from 21 of the 26 NPC organizations representing 1,900 actively involved alumnae in
this association. Atlanta excelled in communication, programming, scholarship, service and leadership while also
supporting each other regardless of the other’s sorority affiliation. These women are advocates for the sorority
experience.”
According to NPC’s most current data, there are 178 Alumnae Panhellenic associations. In the past year,
community-based alumnae groups have collectively:
• Donated 33,380 hours to community service.
• Raised $383,000 for undergraduate and graduate scholarships.
• Contributed $234,600 to community causes.
The Houston Alumnae Panhellenic Association has been designated as the runner up. Other Alumnae
Panhellenic associations receiving honorable mention for outstanding service are Denver, Greater
Kansas City, Jacksonville (Fla.) and Northern Virginia.
