By August 9, 2023November 1st, 2023News Release, Press Release

INDIANAPOLIS – The National Panhellenic Conference Foundation (NPC Foundation) is honoring Kristy Weber, M.D., with its Women in Higher Education Achievement Award (WHEA). The award recognizes an outstanding woman who has made or is making a significant difference in higher education through her scholarship and leadership. Dr. Weber is the Abramson Family Professor in Sarcoma Care Excellence in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) Perelman School of Medicine.

“Through her pursuit of personal and professional excellence, Dr. Weber embodies all we aspire for  our members to be–a true friend and servant leader, grounded in integrity, working to advance the role of women and to make our world a better, more inclusive place,” said Lisa Scott, grand president of Pi Beta Phi, who nominated Dr. Weber for the WHEA Award. “As the first woman president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, she is a leader, mentor and guide to other women pursuing similar careers.”

Weber is a member of Pi Beta Phi and joined the chapter at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she received her bachelor of science degree. As a collegian, she served on her chapter’s Executive Council and she credits that experience with helping her understand how to share space, listen, manage conflict and work within a leadership structure–all vital skills she now relies on in her daily work. After completing her studies at the University of Missouri, she went on to earn her M.D. from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In her current role, Weber manages high-achieving teams of clinical staff and researchers and teaches innovative surgical techniques to medical residents. She is a leader and advocate for the Perry Initiative and the International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliances, organizations focused on improving diversity, equity and inclusion in the field.

She continues to be engaged with and has most recently served her sorority as an alumnae advisor  and provided strategic guidance as a Pi Beta Phi Foundation committee member. In recognition of her  exceptional accomplishments and ongoing commitment, Pi Beta Phi has honored Kristy with several  prestigious awards. Kristy received the Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg Crest Award in 2016 and was named a Member of Distinction in 2009; both awards recognize the highest level of professional  achievement and philanthropic service among Pi Beta Phi members. As a collegian, she received  the Amy Burnham Onken Award in honor of her outstanding scholarship, campus participation and community service. In addition, Kappa Delta presented Kristy with the Elizabeth Winston Lanier Award in 2006 to recognize her years of work in renal cell carcinoma research.

Dr. Weber will be formally honored as the Women in Higher Education Award recipient during the NPC Foundation dinner during the NPC Annual Conference, held October 18-21, 2023, in Dallas – Fort Worth. This award is funded by the NPC Foundation through an endowment established by Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and the Tri Sigma Foundation.
