INDIANAPOLIS – The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), the umbrella group for 26 inter/national women’s-only social sororities and one of the largest organizations advocating for women, is recognizing Reginald “Reggie” Lane, director of the office of sorority and fraternity affairs at the University of Florida (UF), with the 2021 Outstanding Panhellenic Advisor Award.
Lane and his team at UF provide guidance, education and support for four fraternal councils representing 66 fraternity and sorority chapters, including 18 NPC member organization chapters.
“We are pleased to recognize Reginald Lane with the Outstanding Panhellenic Advisor Award for his support of the sorority experience and his dedication to Panhellenic excellence at the University of Florida,” said Linda Henderson, 2020-22 NPC College Panhellenics Committee chairman. “Many who work with Reggie – from his peers to students to NPC volunteers – have shared he epitomizes the best qualities of a professional who specializes in College Panhellenic advising and support.”
An NPC volunteer who nominated Lane praised the programming he has developed and supported within the Panhellenic community at UF. Notably, Lane advocated for a program coordinator from the university’s health promotion office to work directly with the office of sorority and fraternity affairs and the councils it supports. The program coordinator has helped the Panhellenic community with specialized and direct health education, including personalized health coaching, sexual violence prevention and hazing prevention. In addition, the coordinator has been a valuable resource to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The students who nominated Lane also said he inspires unity among chapters and encourages student leaders to lead in accordance with their values. “He focuses on making the women of our community feel supported and empowered, and he is constantly encouraging our council leadership to bring their big ideas to fruition,” said a nominator.
Lane’s student nominators also said he helped with the formation of a Junior Panhellenic and the Sister Support Ambassadors Program within the UF Panhellenic Council that aims to provide a support system and resources to sorority women. He also led recruitment counselor training and diversity, equity and inclusion training initiatives for the College Panhellenic.
Lane also regularly collaborates with many other offices and their administration on campus in the areas of housing, campus safety, facility service and more. His nominators spoke about the praise he has received from campus administrators regarding how he communicates effectively and handles challenging situations.
Henderson added, “Reggie is known on campus as a role model for the values of kindness and respect and for being able to make those around him feel seen and heard. He works tirelessly every day with the Panhellenic women at UF to instill confidence, encourage personal development and build leadership skills.”
Lane is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® and Florida Blue Key. He holds a bachelor of science degree in public health from Western Kentucky University and a master of science in counselor education/school counseling and guidance services from Mississippi State University.
He has been recognized with a number of fraternal industry awards including the Campus Professional of the Year from Gamma Phi Beta, Angela C. Guillory Outstanding Fraternity/Sorority Advisor from Sigma Kappa, Jane H. Sutton Advisor of the Year from Coalition for Collegiate Women’s Leadership (CCWL) and Dr. Tom Shoemaker Advisor of the Year from Southeastern Greek Leadership Association (SGLA).
Outside of work, Lane is the president of the Western Kentucky University Young Alumni Council.
Typically, the Outstanding Panhellenic Advisor is announced and honored in fall during the NPC Annual Conference. With the postponement of the 2021 Annual Conference, Lane has been invited to the next NPC Annual Conference, March 31-April 1, 2022, at The Galt House, in Louisville, Kentucky.
