INDIANAPOLIS – The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) issued the following statement from Dani Weatherford, CEO, to applaud a renewed relationship agreement between the Reno College Panhellenic and the University of Nevada, Reno:
“It is our firm belief that College Panhellenic communities – and campus cultures more broadly – are at their strongest when member organizations and university leaders are working as partners. That’s why we’re thrilled that the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and our Panhellenic chapters historically associated with the campus have re-established their relationship agreement. These organizations include Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Kappa.
Throughout the fall of 2018, the National Panhellenic Conference, on behalf of its member organizations, raised specific concerns about the relationship agreement proposed by university officials. With those concerns unresolved as of January 2019, the six collegiate sorority chapters at UNR decided to forego University recognition and formed an independent College Panhellenic Association. Now that these concerns about student privacy and First Amendment rights have been resolved, the independent chapters and the Panhellenic Association will return as a formally recognized student organization at UNR.
NPC is particularly appreciative of the work of Romando Nash, UNR’s Associate Vice President for Student Life Services, for his collaboration with NPC and our member organizations to address the points of concern the Panhellenic community raised with the previous agreement. This new agreement respects the right of privacy for sorority members who may have been victims of sexual assault and also recognizes the First Amendment rights of students.
NPC is also grateful for the dedicated leadership of the six organizations’ chapter leaders and advisors, as well as the officers and advisors for the College Panhellenic Association. These women provided countless hours of service to the Panhellenic community during the period in which there was no formal relationship between the community and the university. Additionally, the Northern Nevada Alumnae Panhellenic provided financial support for collegiate leadership training and community-building events.
NPC looks forward to the future success of the community as the partnership between university officials, College Panhellenic leaders, inter/national organizations and alumnae volunteers continues to advance the sorority experience and offer opportunities for sisterhood to UNR women.”
